A Guide to Balance in Your 20s

Updated: Feb 28, 2022

From healthy meals, consistent workouts, and hydration during the week to binge drinking, bar hopping, and late night munchies on the weekends - here is your ultimate guide to enjoy your life without losing sight of your health goals.

Do you love getting drunk with your friends, eating out on the weekends and taking that off day (or days) from the gym as much as I do? Well good, because I am here to tell you that not only should you enjoy that part of your life, but you deserve to enjoy it.

As a 24 year old, I have been navigating the path of balance with this part of my life for a handful of years. And I am here to tell you all my tips and tricks on how to maintain your health goals without feeling like you can't be a young, (sometimes) dumb and carefree adult.

My journey of finding balance as a 20 year old started in college. I learned how to live a more rigorous social lifestyle while keeping up my grades and my vegetable intake. I not only learned what works best for me, but also what doesn't work for me. I am here to share with you what can hopefully help you learn your best balance in this area.

So, without further ado - keep reading to find the best guide on how to splurge on life while still keeping a healthy mind and body.

Prioritize Your Diet

This one is MAJOR when it comes to consistency with your health goals. My approach to a balanced diet is focusing on eating clean during the week days when I am in a routine, feel organized, and enjoy spending time prepping my food.

However, once it becomes 5pm on a Friday, then its a different story.

Weekends are meant for relaxing, unwinding and enjoying whatever it is you choose to do with your time. I utilize these days to splurge if I want to, or eat out without guilt. These days are focused around connecting with friends and socializing rather than how many servings of vegetables I can get in each meal.

So, focus on what makes you feel good both during the week and on the weekends.

Incorporate Movement

Working out is a large part of what keeps me happy, and I know not everyone has that relationship with the gym. BUT if you can incorporate any type of movement that you enjoy (running, walking, yoga, strength training) in your every day life you will be much happier and healthier.

This helps to keep your body and mind less stressed and feeling good. A lot of people have been working from home for the last couple of years, so being stationary at a desk all day can definitely take its toll. Exercise is a great way to help maintain your fitness goals while still enjoying a balanced life.

Find Your People

There is nothing better than a support system that lifts you higher and makes you better. The people we surround ourselves with is critical to our happiness and well-being.

Seek out the people who you feel good around, are not judgmental, and will be there for you when you need them. It is easy to lose sight of that when you enjoy people but find they pressure you to go out or gossip about others leaving you feel uneasy.

Focus on the kind of friends that bring so much to your life and keep you mentally happy knowing they are there if you need them.

Become Budget Friendly

Money is a hard topic for people to not only talk about, but think about. It is easy to become overwhelmed with finance vocabulary and long term thinking. Creating a budget, or finding a system that works for you to help track spending, allocate some savings, and overall have a grasp on your finances is a great starting point for a young adult. Feeling confident with your money is a key factor in financial freedom and setting yourself up for future you.

Overall, there are many things that contribute to a balanced life as a young adult, but these aspects play a very large role in your day to day experiences. Staying focused on nutrition and exercise while surrounding yourself with good people and being financially aware are extremely important to your mental and physical wellbeing.
